granddaughter of an earl: Miss Carolyn Hutchins
in conversation: Miss Carolyn or Miss Hutchins?

unmarried sister of an earl: Lady Lucy Stanstead
in conversation: Lady Lucy? (Her mother is a dowager countess.)

My hostess is not titled. The procession into the dining room would still start with the highest ranking male and female, correct?

Thank you for any assistance. I am getting myself confused!

If she is the eldest daughter (like Jane in Pride & Prejudice) than she is addressed as Miss Hutchins. If not, she is Miss Carolyn Hutchins.

And BTW, the more typical form of her name would have been Caroline. Carolyn is a more modern variation.

Correct.

My heroine is from 2008 but I will change her name to Caroline. Anything that gives the reader pause, or takes them out of the book, is not good.

Oh, if she's modern, leave her name alone. I thought she was a Regency Miss.

I was just checking over things for my time-travel book. If the name will bug readers/editors I could change it.
