Candice, I FINALLY managed to locate the Regency-era image of men and women bathing communally at Bath (there are others from the 17th and early 18th century). Sadly it's not in a book (drove myself crazy trying to find it). It's one of the images shown on Tony Robinson’s WORST JOBS IN HISTORY: The Georgians. It's clearly by Rowlandson, Cruickshank or Gillray.

Sadly the image isn’t in the companion book and you can’t buy it on DVD here in the States (or even in Canada).

So I guess we can accept that Bath scene in the old Northanger Abbey production as valid, ie with men and women in the baths together.

Seems crazy, but it does appear to be accurate.

I believe Vic at Jane Austen's World has the print you're referring to: http://janeaustensworld.wordpress.com/2008/07/13/public-bathing-in-bath-georgian-style/

Thanks for the link, NoirFemme. I especially love the quote from Aristocrats, which I ought to have remembered.

I do love that scene in the old Northnager Abbey production. It's just so darned atmspheric!

That's not the same image, but even better (!): It means we have multiple pieces of documentation for this.
