Gowns from the later part of the Regency (the teens and 20s) were of stiffer fabric, with an A-line skirt rather than the square gathered-type typical of the early round gowns. They were usually back opening, with buttons or hook and eyes up the back of the bodice. Netting was extremely popular, and many examples can be found (most notably Princess Charlotte’s wedding dress of silver net). The drop-front style has been abandoned, and you basically only see the new “A-line” round gowns during this period.

NET GOWNS

This are sort of a whole subspecies. They could have been of any style, but the net overlay makes them unique. Net became very popular in the teens, but was also seen before that.

Red net “shawl” dress, c. 1805-1810 (you see quite a few shawl dresses in the fashion plates)

Princess Charlotte’s wedding dress of silver net with train, c. 1816 (I've been told that there have been extensive alterations to the skirt of this gown, and that the little apron-looking bit in the front is not original).

GOWNS WHICH LACE UP THE BACK

1816 court dress with a spiral lace closure. This is the only extant example I have found of a lacing gown from our period (note: this gown is Spanish).

Fashion plate from Costume Parisien, 1806; You can clearly see the spiral lacing up the back of her dress.
