I loved the article on knitted purses, and the one on miser purses. Also, those beaded purses are beautiful. I am a beginner-intermediate knitter. I've been searching for early-19th century or regency-period knitting patterns. Those purses are so cute, I wish I could find a pattern for them online! I also think I saw something about Civil War purse patterns in a Victoriana ezine the other day, which I get a free email subscription to (it is at victoriana dot com, if anyone is interested in a free subscription; it's not strictly regency period stuff, but they have a lot of informative articles and such). Most vintage knitting pattern web sites have mainly patterns from the 20th century, and a few civil war era designs, but I haven't so far run across any Regency period knits, and that would be thrilling to find!

I've seen Civil War era/Victorian patterns for miser purses. The style didn't change much since the late 18th century, so you could use one of those patterns and still say it was Regency style. The earlier ones are much smaller than the later Victorian ones, and the early ones tend to have both ends alike, whereas the Victorian ones have two different ends. The the basic concept - ie of a stocking purse -- remained constant.

I'm glad you found the articles useful.

Thanks Candice! I searched on yahoo groups and found HistoricKnit, a group that discusses knitting in many different time periods. Here are some of the links I found, searching through the old message threads about the Regency period:

there are a few pictures of knitted items from the period at the Victoria and Albert museum site: http://www.vam.ac.uk/collections/fashion/knitting/objects/index.php

There is a War of 1812 civilian group on yahoogroups that has a lot of resources and links. I think the name of the group is like 1812Civilian.

The Workwoman's Guide has a bunch of patterns that would be
appropriate for Regency even though it was published in the late
1838s. A nice pair of stockings with a simple lace pattern like
feather and fan would also be appropriate.
How to make a pocket:

Piper Publishing llc:

advanced search
all fields: knitting
time period 1790 1850

there is a nice picture and some information
about a Miser's Purse on page 34 of January 2006 "Country Living"
magazine (item 2).

The Ladies Work-Book (probably more Victorian than Regency):

The HistoricKnit group's files area also contains a document with knitting pattern for a miser's purse.
