I've been searching and can find nothing. Does anyone know if there are floorplans available for Brooke's? _________________ ___________________

I have lots of reference books on gentlemen's clubs, but none include floor plans. And though I've walked by Brooks's many times, I've never knocked on the door and asked to see inside.
I do know the the Great Subscription Room, famously depicted in a Rowlandson watercolor, was on what we would call the second floor (British call it the first floor, our "first floor" being the ground floor). The Card Room was on the same floor. The morning room was on the ground floor. That's all I've been able to glean so far. _________________

Yes, from what I remember reading of Brooke's, there was a grand entrance hall that opened up into a great room and it was a long narrow room with fireplaces and chairs spanning the length and that there were doors to rooms all along the walls that led into private card rooms, etc. But I do remember someone mentioning a second floor and I couldn't remember what was up there or even where the dining area was.
I've passed Brooke's a hundred times myself. LOL. Next time, I'm knocking. _________________ ___________________

| You can ring the librarian of the club and ask him information--that's what I did when I wanted to know what Garrick's looked like. |

I've always thought it was much smaller. I recall reading several times about there being a big bay window where some of the gents would sit and drink. I guess I always thought it was smaller because there always seemed to be a hush over the room whenver the hero was talking or someone was spreading gossip.
Very interesting to see this photo. It alters my mental image quite a bit. _________________ ~~*Diana*~~

The famous bay window is in White's not Brooks's (which I've seen spelled Brookes, Brooks', Brookes's). _________________ -Kalen

I know no women were allowed entrance to the mens clubs, but what of those women and were there upper rooms or private areas for clandestine encounters, albeit paid for? _________________ ___________________

To the extent of my knowledge, no women of any kind were allowed into the clubs (there was probably an exception for maids, but I'm not even sure about that). Most clubs did have bedrooms that the members could use (they still do!), but I don't think women--even those women--were allowed in to them.
Even events like The Cyprians' Ball, thrown by the members of White's, were not held at the club itself. _________________ -Kalen
