Where might a visiting foreigner (American if it makes a difference) stay while in London in the mid-1820's and where would he eat his meals. This is a well to do person and he would be taking a lady to dinner as well so I assume one of the gentlemen's clubs wouldn't be in the picture.
P.S. Fabulous site. I've been lurking here forever. |

There were grand hotels in London at that time, and those would have elegant dining rooms where a lady could join a gentleman for dinner. The most fashionable up-scale hotels at the time were the Clarendon, Grillon's, and the Pulteney (where the Tsar and his sister stayed in 1814).
Other hotels that were still respectable but not quite as grand were Limmer's, Fenton's, Fladong's, Stephen's, and Long's. A man would make use of the dining room at the hotel, some of which boasted very fine chefs, but these lesser hotels are unlikely to have been a place to take a woman to dine -- unless she was your wife and staying at the hotel with you. _________________

Thank you, Candice. Perfect answer on two fronts as I needed a less acceptable place as well. You must be a mind reader! |
