Hello all,
I thought it would be nice to recommend a book to you all which is brilliant for research purposes. I'm not sure if any of you have it, have read it, or heard of it, but here it is; It's called The Gentleman's Daughter- Women's Lives in Georgian England by Amanda Vickery--a noted feminist historian.
This book was like a bible to me during my academic studies, and is very readable; not at all dry like so many scholarly works can be. Vickery writes about the lives and experiences of everyday gentlewomen, and covers lots of topics, from love and marriage, to manners, fashion, consumption and propriety.
I can't recommend it highly enough. You can search inside it on Amazon

Thank you for the tip. I will check it out.
My favorite resource right now is Georgette Heyer's Regency World by Jennifer Kloester. I ordered it from Amazon but it came from a London bookshop.

A really good book, though the dates covered are 1830-1914, is Pamela Horn's Ladies of the Manor. _________________ Edwardian Promenade // blog of all things Edwardian! |

Have you found Vickery's book to be one of the best you've used? I ask because none of the libraries in my area have it, so I would have to buy it. I just want to make sure it's worth it before I shell out my cash.
Thanks! _________________ Writing and Re-Writing,

Hello Grace,
Yes, Vickery's book is excellent; amongst the best out there, but it's definitely an academic work, with a strong feminist perspective. She is a very well respected historian. Having said that, it is very readable and packed full of interesting information about subjects like marriage settlements, courtship, masquerade balls, and the rise of the female consumer (just a few examples). There is a lot of c18 history in there, so bear in mind it's not specifically Regency before you buy it, but deals with the whole Georgian period of British history.
I think if you go to Amazon, you can search inside the book and see what you think.
