I'm wondering if someone could point me in the direction of where I could find pictures of men's evening attire (preferably for a ball or formal dinner) for the late Regency early Victorian - I'm looking around the 1820's and 1830's?

Candice, your fashion pages are great, but they don't go any later than the early 1820's. I've searched the web, but perhaps I'm just not searching with the right key words.

I often refer to a book called Men's Fashion: The Complete Sourcebook by John Peacock. It's not wonderful, but it is useful enough. It has color drawings of men's costumes for various years, along with descriptions. For example, there are pages for Day Wear 1819-1824, Day Wear 1825-1829, Evening Wear 1816-1829, Negligee and Underwear 1816-1829, etc. There are typically eight drawings per page and they're pretty decent. You might want to try to track this one down in the library and see if it helps.

In the meantime, here are a couple of 1820s French gentlemen I had among my collections:

Thanks Candice! I love the cape, it's given me an idea! I had an image in my head about what my hero's clothing would look like, but I wanted it to be accurate. I think I was pretty close.

Basiclly the layers are the same, but the shoulders are padded, the waist is nipped in, and you start to see gathers and fullness at the top of the coat sleeves. You also mostly see men in long pantaloons for eveingwear, with the buttons exposed, as they are wearing pumps. You also start seeing mustaches and beards on most of the men in the 30s.
