| |
| Could entailed property, including a viscount's family seat, be mortgaged? Also, was a girl's dowry money set aside in such a way that it would be inaccessible, in the event of a family becoming essentially destitute? Or could a girl's dowry be taken and spent by her guardian or other male family-members? |

I doubt you could get a mortgage on an entailed property, because you don't actually own it. You only have use for your lifetime and the lender would have nothing to collect on should you fail to repay it.
As for the dowry, I'm really not sure. I know that what is in the settlements is legally binding, but I don't know if it had to be set aside at the time and was inviolate. Good question. I'll ask around. _________________ -Kalen

It's almost like the peer is a custodian for the property for his kids, who in turn...
That said, people regularly borrowed against and received credit at establishments based on earnings from their properties and for estimated personal wealth. _________________ Medieval & Regency Writer

A girl's father might be able to do this, but generally a if a girl of means is left orphaned, more than one man is named as a trustee to prevent abuse of this sort. And the guardian is also usually someone who can not inherit from her. _________________ -Kalen
