Whenever I see dresses like these I can't help but wonder how long and how many people it took to get into the darn thing. Kind of makes all of those love scenes we read about at Court unlikely. |

If you sit in a narrow chair they fold up accordion-style next to your body (though this wouldn’t be necessary when the hoops are in your armpits already, as these are). Same deal if you need to pass through a narrow doorway or into a carriage. You just fold ‘em up.
Most of the chairs these ladies might have sat in were armless, so there was no problem at all. The biggest problem with these late-Georgian court gowns was the train (and having to walk backwards with them, while appearing graceful; can you imagine?).
You can see how the hoops worked in one of the archives on my website (it’s a pdf so you have to wait for it to open). The first image is a set of large cane hoops from Germany, and you can see how they collapse:

I always wondered how they worked. Those pictures really help. Still, I am very glad I live in a jeans and tee shirt era! |

Maybe they made the hoops so wide so men can't get too close? LOL I agree they don't go well with the high waist.
