TALES FROM THE TABLOIDS

"In consequence of the curious account given in the public prints of the swimming Elephant at Poonah, the people at Margate were lately surprised at the monstrous appearance of a live animal in the sea during bathing time. The bathers all pronounced it a visit from the famous Elephanta; but, on discovery, it was found to be the rolling of a lady who keeps a cheesemonger's shop in the Borough, and who had been taking her first dip!"

More Tales from the Regency Tabloids are scattered throughout this website. Find the next one somewhere on this page »
