“In consequence of the curious account given in the public prints of the swimming Elephant at Poonah, the people at Margate were lately surprised at the monstrous appearance of a live animal in the sea during bathing time. The bathers all pronounced it a visit from the famous Elephanta; but, on discovery, it was found to be the rolling of a lady who keeps a cheesemonger’s shop in the Borough, and who had been taking her first dip!“
