Luxus & Lifestyle: Weimar and the Wide World

The Goethe Museum in Düsseldorf, Germany held an exhibit in 2021-2022 using the fashion magazine Journal des Luxus und der Moden, published from 1786 to 1827,  as a background for exploring fashion and decorative arts from that period.

The cover of the exhibition catalog, seen above, echoed the magazine’s flaming orange cover, which from then on became associated with the terms “luxury” and “fashion.”

In the page below from the catalog, a specific fashion print from the magazine’s August 1805 issue is shown to have been copied from a print in the July 1805 issue of the French magazine Journal des Dames et des Modes (Frankfurt edition), which in turn was copied from the original British print from the June 1805 issue of the magazine Fashions of London and Paris.

The only copy of the British print the museum was able to find was on this website. Candice gave them permission to use her print in this beautiful catalog.
